Trading Post since 1823

Raftsundet and the Lofoten archipelago has been inhabited for thousands of years. Archaeological findings in nearby areas indicate human activity dating back to the Stone Age, suggesting that Brakøya may have been visited or used by people long before permanent settlements were established.
The last people to live on the Brakøya was Eilif Hansen Gunnarsjaa and his wife Johanna. They settled on Brakøya in the early 1930s. Eilif took over the trading post from his father, Ludvig Hansen, who had managed it since 1915. Together, Eilif and Johanna operated the shop, post office, and a small farm in Lauksundet, serving as a vital hub for the local community until the early 1980s.
Passed on to the new Generation
Brakøya is owned and operated by three entrepreneurs who have been active in Lofoten for more than 15 years. With backgrounds from both exclusive ski touring and travel experiences in Lofoten, they have developed a deep understanding of the region’s unique nature and culture. Their vision for Brakøya is to create a sustainable and regenerative destination focused on authentic experiences, simplicity, and a deep connection with nature, aiming to promote a more mindful and natural lifestyle.
The new owners of Brakøya embark on an ambitious venture. Poised to reveal the island’s untapped potential to the world. A bridge has been built between the old and the new trading post. They are honoring the tradition while embracing the progress, ensuring a harmonious relationship with the environment.
